Addition of the Wilderness Treatment Program Expands Aspen’s Ability to Provide Outdoor Therapy to Under-Achieving Youths

(CERRITOS, CA – April 28, 2004) — Aspen Education Group has announced the acquisition of the Walkabout Wilderness Treatment Program, a Utah-based wilderness program. Walkabout utilizes outdoor experiences and peer interaction in combination with individual student therapy to help positively change the lives of young people who are experiencing difficulties at home or in school.

“The Walkabout program is a great complement to our many existing outdoor and residential programs for under-achieving youths,” said Aspen Chief Executive Officer Elliot Sainer. “Walkabout is designed as a life-changing rite of passage for students who will learn character development in a unique and challenging wilderness setting. At the same time, it offers students the opportunity for greater introspection and growth through individual time with a Ph.D.-level therapist twice a week and includes weekly involvement with each student’s parents.”

The Walkabout Treatment Program will continue to be managed on site by its former owners, Rick Meeves, Ph.D., and Tim Thayne, Ph.D. Both are licensed marriage and family therapists with a long history of experience in outdoor education programs.

“We are committed to the same goals as Aspen — to assist troubled teens and their families in learning to overcome the negative habits that prevent success, healthy relationships and the ability to achieve life goals,” said Dr. Meeves. “We are very excited to become a part of Aspen Education’s successful outdoor division and to contribute to their ongoing growth and the success of the many students who come through our program.”

Since its founding in April 2001, the Walkabout Wilderness Treatment Program has helped hundreds of young people confront self-defeating thoughts and behaviors and embark on journeys of self-exploration and success. For more information visit their Web site at www.walkabout-treatment.com.
